Flanigan’s restaurants and Florida Power & Light Co. have teamed up to help families save on their energy bills — and their dinner check.
They recently launched the Save Together, Dine Together: FPL Family Challenge, which quizzes families on their energy-efficiency knowledge. Each week until Thursday, Oct. 15, up to 100 FPL customers in Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Martin counties can answer questions — and they will be timed — about saving energy on the interactive platform at FPLSaveTogether.com. The highest scorers will have a chance to win a family meal of four half-racks of ribs, French fries and coleslaw at Flanigan’s.
Answer 10 multiple-choice questions such as: What household appliance should not be blocked to increase energy efficiency by up to 40%? What do you use to keep sunlight from heating up your home?
The leaderboard is refreshed at 9 a.m. every Thursday. As of Sept. 14, the leading scorer had a time of 30 seconds. Participants can play as many times as they want to improve their score, but FPL customers can only win once.
According to FPL, its customers are using more energy this summer as people work at home, cook more meals and stay in because of COVID-19. The company offers these tips to save money on energy bills:
- Keep bedroom and other doors open — closed doors can block the airflow and cause your air conditioner to pump more air to keep the house cool.
- Turn off fans and lights when you leave a room. Remember, fans cool people, not rooms. Leaving on lights or a lamp when you leave the room can run up the bill.
- Adjust the washing machine to the appropriate water level for each load and clean the lint filter in your dryer before every load to minimize drying time.
- Video game consoles can add to energy costs, especially when left on. Save energy and money by opting for a board game night or spending time outdoors with your family, and remember to turn off the video game console when you are done.
